Announced on March 2nd, the iPad 2 will once again be available in GSM guise, and for the last week one question has been on everybody’s lips: Is the GSM iPad unlocked? The answer is yes. Ish.

Citing the usual ‘people familiar with the iPad 2′, 9to5Mac claims that the GSM iPad 2 will actually be unlocked in most markets, though their sources haven’t yet confirmed which markets they are.

Other news to come out of the 9to5Mac post is that the SIM card slow had moved from the site to the top-left of the device, presumably due to the iPad 2′s new svelte design.

The iPad 2 launches in the US on Friday, 11th of March, while select other countries including the UK and Canada will have to wait until March 25th.

Desperate for a wireless keyboard to use with my Apple iPad when I stumbled across Zagg’s ZAGGMate, a wireless bluetooth keyboard-case fashioned out of aluminum and fitted as a case for my new iPad tablet computer – Brilliant.

Unboxing

When I opened the box I was delighted to see just how light this iPad combo bluetooth keyboard / case was. I was also thrilled to see just how thin it was, adding only 1/8″ to my already svelte iPad. Assembly was simple, all I needed to do was to peel off and attach the little silicone ‘feet’ to the bottom, a feature that keeps the smooth aluminum from sliding across the table. Also, weighing in at 13 oz is a blessing compared to the 25 oz of my unencumbered iPad 3G, only 2 oz more than the leather case I was previously using. The rechargeable battery is built in lasts through the week.

Style & Form

The ZAGGMate is a divine looking piece of equipment, reminiscent of the pieces that Carrera Design fashioned for hard drive cases and desk accessories. The keys, although small, are tactile and give me the same feedback as the Dell laptop I have become used to using over the past 4 years.  The edges of the ZAGGmate have a foamy rubber lining, allowing the iPad to fit in safely and securely, I can also see how these would offer some protection in the event of a fall, in shaving off a G or two upon impact. The interior, above and below the slightly recessed keyboard is made of the same soft and smooth foamy rubber, clearly there to protect the screen or your screen protector from scratches caused by the keys. The small size of the ZAGGmates keys are a little bit of a sacrifice, but giving up key size for the benefit of portability is an acceptable trade off. To lock your iPad into the ZAGGMate, you flip up a small tab and insert the edge of your iPad into a small groove, either vertically or horizontally.

Functionality

Functionality of the ZAGGMate bluetooth keyboard was better than I expected it to be. First off, because it functions using bluetooth, you must ‘pair’ your ZAGGMate to your device. Doing so is simple, turn on the ZAGGMate, turn on your iPad.  In Settings -> General, go to bluetooth and turn on the function. You will see your ZAGGMate appear under devices. On the ZAGGMate, press the bluetooth button, which is slightly and safely recessed into the foamy rubber mentioned earlier. Upon pressing the bluetooth button your iPad will display a pairing message, prompting you to enter a 4 digit code and then the return key, on the ZAGGMate, to pair the two devices, upon doing so you allow the keyboard access to function with your iPad. The keyboard layout is familiar, with dedicated numbers keys across the top, and the usual array of shift, control, option, command, and function keys.

Additionally, and much to my surprise, there is a dedicated ‘home’ key that mocks the function of the round little button on the front of my iPad and iPhone for allowing me quick access to the home screen, multitasking and searching. There is also a power key to allow you to turn the iPad screen on and off. As well there is a dedicated search button, keyboard button to display and hide the onscreen keyboard, a screen shot key to allow you to take instant screen shots, volume keys, a mute key, there are song specific keys for pause, forward, and rewind and even a key to force your photo screen-saver to initiate.

Usability

The device is a great, light weight, long lasting, time saver, allowing me to type about 2x the speed I am accustomed to on the on-screen keyboard. The battery life is amazing, Zagg states several weeks with normal use, making it easy to take with me all week and charge on the weekend, allowing me to leave the charger at home. As for being able to keep my hands 100% off of the touchscreen, it didn’t happen, I still needed to use my fingers for sliding through home screen windows, selecting icons (apps) and for zooming, due to the lack of a zoom key.

As a point to note the ZAGGMate also works with my iPhone and iPod touch, offering me the same wireless bluetooth keyboard functionality I am becoming used to using.

ZAGGMate Conclusion (Max 5 Stars)

Style and Design	ZAGGMate gets 5 stars for being cool, compact and a great conversation piece on the streets. The power coated aluminum case is devine and stylish.
Functionality	I am taking off 1/2 star for  primarily for the lack of a zoom key and the lack of a key that allows me to scroll through home screen windows, for all else the function is great.
Usability	For this I am taking off 1/2 star for the size of the keyboard, an understandable caveat but, nonetheless a small hindrance to my ability to work as quickly as I can on laptop
Overall	Effective, Efficient, Small, Light – Great Battery life, several weeks – no need to carry around a charger. A bargain for the $99 I spent for it.

The ZAGGMate is a great device allowing me to increase my productivity throughput by letting me type faster on a dedicated tactile keyboard vs. the less accurate touch-screen one native the ipad. It also facilitates an ingenious cradle to permit me to view my iPad at the proper viewing angle, either vertically or horizontally. |Review via Times Square Chronicles|

Starting off, I have to give ZAGG points for presentation. This keyboard is a nice piece of kit! It seems very well put together; the keys are firm and very responsive. The iPad fits snugly into the case when I want to use it as a cover. I don’t feel it’ll drop out and I for sure feel that it’s protected when it’s in the case. I like to use my iPad “naked” and, when it’s not in the case – or when I’m not typing something – I can just carry the iPad. No extra covers… Very good. We’ll see how snugly it continues to fit as I use it, but so far, so good. I did buy a ZAGGskin for the back of the iPad, given that now it’s just “hanging all out there.”

I was a little concerned over a plastic keyboard constantly touching the glass of my iPad, but it’s not. There are three higher areas of the keyboard that actually touch the iPad face (the keyboard is recessed further than these areas). These areas are covered with this soft rubbery-like stuff (scientific terms here!). The point is, only those soft bits are touching my precious baby. One concern alleviated.

The keyboard came with a cable for charging. It had a mini-USB at one end (to go into the ZAGGmate) and a regular USB connection at the other end. It did not come with an actual AC connector, so you’ll have to plug it in to your PC/Mac or a powered USB hub. Fortunately, I had a spare AC/USB connector, so I was able to plug it right in for recharging. Granted, I guess you could use the iPad’s connector. I guess including a regular AC adaptor wouldn’t have made such a nice sllm package on the shelf. But still…

I noticed some people were worried about the edge of the keyboard cutting into, or bothering the wrists. I don’t find that to be a problem. I am a touch typist and if I hold my hands properly, they don’t even touch the front of the keyboard. When I get lazy and rest my hands, I’m still not bothered by the lip in front. The cutaway is just enough.

The keyboard paired right up with the iPad on first start. You get directions for that and they work great. Now that it’s paired to the iPad, I leave the Bluetooth on [the iPad] and turn off the keyboard when I’m not using it. Then, when I turn on the keyboard, it automatically pairs up with the iPad. I’ll have to see how keeping the Bluetooth on affects my battery. I’m not worried, though, as I plug the iPad in nightly. It’s now 7pm and my iPad/Bluetooth have been on since 6am this morning – I have 47% battery left. Worse comes to worse, I’ll just turn off Bluetooth when I turn off the keyboard.

Some neat features:

- The function keys! There are some specifically set up to 1) operate the home button (including the doubletap to switch apps), 2) open the search function, 3) start a slideshow, 4) hide/show the iPad keyboard, 5) darken the screen – and make it come back again (just like the sleep button), 6), 7) & volume up, down & mute, 9), 10) & 11) play/pause, previous/next track and 12) international keyboard toggle. Very handy, having these keys. And, they work just as if you are using the iPad controls.

- The arrow keys are neat. *The keyboard has up, down, left and right. And, not only are they fully functioning, they also help to copy/cut/paste. No more little magnifying glass when using this keyboard. Oh, and no two-finger swipe in a dialog window … can just use the arrow keys. Nice!

- You can also use some keyboard shortcuts, such as those for copy and paste. It appears as if they are based on Mac shortcuts, which I’ll have to learn (Cmd C = copy, cmd V= paste). There are more, I’m just not familiar with them (I’ve never had a Mac/Apple product until this iPad…).

- The plastic hinge to prop the iPad works as expected, but I don’t really like it. For one, it props the iPad up on a higher angle than I’d like, though that may make some people happy. Plus, when the iPad is fitted into the slot, it just feels as if I am closed in. It’s hard to describe, but it kind of puts me off balance. I’ll just continue to use my cheap wire rack holder-thingy. ‘Sides, I like that I can have the iPad on the table (or tiny school desk) while I have the keyboard in my lap, typing. Don’t get me wrong, it appears to be very stable while propped up in that keyboard slot. And, I’ve just tried typing in my lap … which is fine. Which leads me to the next point,

- The iPad is VERY stable in this little slot. It doesn’t look it from the pictures, but it’s not really going anywhere. I had the keyboard flat on my lap with the iPad in the slot. I then tilted the whole set-up back and only when I reached a 45 degree angle did I start to worry whether the iPad was going to stay in place (yes, I had my hand behind it … I ain’t stooopid! ). But, that was one of my worries, which appears to be unfounded as it seems very secure. Yay!

I’m sure I’ll find out more of what this keyboard can do as I go along. One thing is, the Delete key is actually a backspace key and I can’t find a Delete function (where you can delete text to the right of the cursor). It’s early days yet, maybe it’s there. It would’ve helped if ZAGG had included a bit more than the rudimentary instructions they did, but that’s okay. The arrow keys (and, of course, my finger!) make not having a real Delete key no big deal. The other thing is figuring out the key shortcuts … which are Mac-centric. I’ve got a bit of a learning curve here…

Overall, I am 99% thrilled I got this thing. The other 1% is from trying to work a new keyboard (STILL hitting Ns for Bs! – and the space bar is hard to activate). I’ll bet that once I a) break it in or b) get used to it, my satisfaction will jump up to 100%. It’s that good. I’ve also got my expirimenting to do to see what exactly this thing/can will do. Looking forward to continuing to play with/use it. Bottom line- I’m in love!

I cannot recommend this case highly enough. This is a perfect solution to my desire for a case, a keyboard and to use the iPad [mostly] naked. I am very pleased and would buy it all over again. Now, I am off to buy a ZAGGskin for the back of the cover/keyboard so I don’t scratch up that pretty aluminum. Buying a protective cover for a protective cover. Now that’s just SAD …

Step 1: Unwanted ZAGG Codes

Quick and easy. You may luck out finding a ZAGG discount code on our “Unwanted ZAGG Codes” Page. But, keep in mind, there are a lot of ZAGG fans looking for codes. So, bookmark this site and check back often. Also keep an eye on the www.facebook.com/zaggcodes site where our ZAGG fans often post codes.

Step 2: Daily 50 or 100% off Codes

ZAGG sends out limited use discount codes once or twice per day through Twitter, Facebook, and Google’s Buzz. We keep an eye out for these promotions and post them on the Daily Discount Codes Page. If you see deals posted on these other sites, share them with the ZAGG Codes community by Re-Posting them on the ZAGG Codes4Discount Facebook page! But, the competition is fierce. Keep in mind that most of these updates are done in the late afternoon Central Standard Time (CST) Monday through Friday.

Step 3: iPad Drawing and FREE ZAGG codes!

ZAGG will email you a ZAGG discount code and enter you into their Weekly iPad Drawing. The codes they send are going to be 10, 20, 25, 30, 40, or 50% off. You are able to enter the drawing once per IP Address per Day and once per email per week. So if you have a couple different email addresses enter daily using a different email address! Step 4: Free Products through Twitter and Contests
